He angitūtanga | About the role
The Sounds District is seeking an experienced, self-motivated and capable Supervisor to lead, support and develop our mainland Biodiversity Team in this permanent, full-time position.
Supporting the Operations Manager, you are responsible for planning, organising and implementing the delivery of biodiversity work for our team of Rangers. Although the role is expected to be somewhat field based, supervising and supporting the Rangers you manage will also require you to place just as much importance on the delivery of office-based tasks.
You will work closely with the Operations Manager and Senior Ranger, Biodiversity to develop and deliver the work plans as well as collaborate with other teams to achieve greater conservation outcomes for the District. You will maintain and build great relationships with the wider community, iwi, hapu and whanau.
The position will be focussed on:
- coaching and mentoring team members to equip them to succeed in their work
- collaborating with other Supervisors in the District to ensure priority work is covered
- actively working with whānau, hapū and iwi in delivering the work programme
- leading the team in a way that inspires trust, respect and continuous improvement in performance
- managing and building stakeholder relationships
- supporting the Operations Manager in the leadership of the team
This role will be based in our Picton office.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
You will be an experienced people leader or an up-and-coming leader, ideally with experience in conservation. We want to hear from you if you have the following:
- Demonstrated leader/supervisor skills and the ability to inspire, motivate and coach a passionate team.
- Previous experience in biodiversity including knowledge of native flora and fauna and pest control.
- Strong field planning and coordinating skills, including the ability to prioritise your own work and that of the delivery team.
- Willingness to contribute to the wider office needs and culture e.g. duty officer, H&S forums, represent the office in a public capacity.
- Computer and technologically savvy skills.
- Strong understanding and values of health and safety.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
- A high level of fitness with remote area/ backcountry experience.
- A genuine interest in the Departments management of our natural and cultural heritage, and an enthusiasm for engaging others in conservation.
- Self-motivated and can-do attitude.
- Full New Zealand Driver Licence.
Desirable:
- A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in science or natural heritage management.
- Boating/skippering qualifications.
- Good knowledge of the local Sounds District.
- Current first aid certificate.
- Previous experience engaging and working in partnership with iwi and tangata whenua, as well as an understanding of the implications of te Tiriti o te Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) on today's society and conservation.

The salary range for this position is $77,336 to $97,708 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
